Connect Mastodon

A Mastodon connection is one account on one instance. Marketing uses it to post, with pictures, and to read the numbers of its posts. It is your org's or a brand's. See Connections for how connecting works in general.

Ways to connect

Mastodon is connected with Add a key only: an access token that you make on your own instance, pasted with the instance's address. Every instance is its own server with its own rules, so there is no GreenMind app and no shared sign-in, and no one address to start from: you make the token on your own instance. The dialog also offers Post by hand instead: you give the account's name and instance address, GreenMind prepares each post and opens your instance's share page for you to finish it, and nothing is held for the account.

Making the token

  1. Sign in to your instance as the account that will post.
  2. Open Preferences, then Development, and choose New application.
  3. Name it so you know what it is for. Leave the redirect URI as the instance proposes: nothing signs in through it.
  4. Tick the scopes listed below, and nothing more.
  5. Save, open the application, and copy Your access token.
  6. On the Connections page, choose Add a key for Mastodon. Give the Instance address, starting with https:// (for example https://mastodon.social), paste the token into Key, token or address, and press Test and save.

Scopes

write:statuses write:media read:accounts read:statuses
Use Scopes
Post write:statuses, write:media, read:accounts
Read post insights read:statuses, read:accounts

Tick all four if the connection will do both. A token made without a scope fails when it is used for it.

If it goes wrong

  • The instance is refused. The address must be reached over HTTPS and be the instance the token was made on, not the address of a profile.
  • The token is not accepted. It was copied wrongly, or the application was deleted on the instance. Make a new one and Reconnect.
  • A post is too long, or has too many pictures. Each instance sets its own limits (500 characters and four pictures are the usual ones), and GreenMind reads them from the instance.
  • Rate limits. An instance limits an account to about 300 requests every 5 minutes, and media uploads more tightly.
