Connect Reddit

A Reddit connection is one Reddit account. Marketing uses it to submit text and link posts to subreddits, read a subreddit's rules and flairs, and read the numbers of the posts it made. It does not make image or video posts. It is your org's or a brand's. See Connections for how connecting works in general. For Reddit ads, see Connect Reddit Ads.

Ways to connect

  • Connect, through GreenMind's app, where it is open to your org.

  • Use your own app: a "web app" on Reddit's apps page; Reddit's OAuth2 documentation explains the rest.

  • Post by hand instead, at the foot of the Use your own app dialog: you give the account's name, GreenMind prepares each post and opens Reddit's submit page for you to finish it, and nothing is held for the account. This is the way to post while Reddit has not approved an app.

There is no key option.

Before you start: Reddit approves apps

Reddit has to approve an app before it may call Reddit's API, and Reddit has said that it is changing how API access is requested. Check Reddit's current rules for developers before you make an app; this page cannot tell you whether Reddit is taking requests. Without an approved app, a Reddit connection cannot post by itself; posting by hand still works.

Making your own app

  1. Open the Use your own app dialog for Reddit on the Connections page, and keep it open.
  2. On Reddit's apps page, signed in as the account the app belongs to, create an app. Give it a name, and choose the type web app.
  3. Set its redirect uri to the redirect URL from the dialog, copied exactly.
  4. Create it. The app's client id is shown under its name, and its secret beside it. Paste both into the dialog and press Connect.
  5. Sign in to Reddit as the account that will post, and allow it.

Scopes

identity submit read flair history edit

Reddit asks the person signing in to allow the scopes in the sign-in request, so there is nothing to tick on the app. What each is for:

Scope Why
identity Names the account
submit Makes posts
read Reads a subreddit's rules and a post's numbers
flair Reads a subreddit's flairs
history Reads the account's own recent posts
edit Deletes a post

A connection used only for numbers asks for identity and read.

If it goes wrong

  • Invalid redirect URI. The redirect uri on the app differs from the dialog's.
  • Unauthorized right after a correct sign-in. The client id and secret are swapped or mistyped, or Reddit has not approved the app.
  • Needs reconnecting. Reddit no longer accepts the token. Reconnect.
  • Throttled. Reddit allows an app about 100 requests a minute, shared by every connection made through that app.
